A player's guide to buying pets

Post by Leone »

Been playing FT for a while and wondered why some players have monsters following them about but are not attacking them? These are in fact pets and this is a player’s guide to help you choose and buy them. This is not an official guide - it is written by a player for other players (particularly those new to the game) and should be read in conjunction with the following:

Game rules: http://forum.dmgamestudio.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=2560
Here you will find all the official rules of the game, including the buying of pets.

Game FAQs: http://forum.dmgamestudio.com/viewtopic ... 25&t=14031

Pet list: http://forum.dmgamestudio.com/viewtopic ... t=pet+list
Here you will find a list of pets and their stats. We will return to this later.

A list of monsters showing their level requirements to be pets.
viewtopic.php?f=25&t=5843&p=132981&hili ... al#p125061

Edit: August 2020 - level requirements for pets added to the Monsters' Manual
viewtopic.php?f=25&p=125484#p125484

Edit: February 2021 - pet storage added without the need to purchase a house for real money.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of pets? Here are some examples:

ADVANTAGES
* Pets’ attacks can be incredibly strong and will help you level up much faster than if you didn’t have them.
* They can carry more items and potions than your character working alone: great for PvM encounters
* They can be used indirectly during PvP. More potions mean that you can keep fighting for longer.
* Their greater storage is necessary to complete certain quests.
* Like player characters, if they stand inactive then their health will regenerate

DISADVANTAGES
* Once pets die, they are dead forever. They do not respawn at the start map.
* Although pets regenerate, heal potions and heal spells have no effect on them.
* They can sometimes be difficult to control.
* Place them against stronger monsters and they will die quickly.
* They can be targets for unscrupulous players who drag monsters onto them.
* Pets remain with you constantly, unless (a) they die (b) you have purchased a house where you can store them (c) you store them in the pet stable at 0, -1.

Pets can be separated into three main categories:

1. Those that are temporary and needed for quests
2. Those you can buy ingame for gold
3. Those you can buy for real money

In light of the first disadvantage, here is a piece of advice that should not be ignored: your first pet(s) should not be purchased for real money. A pet bought with gold can be replaced relatively easily. Practise, practise and practise some more owning these pets and visiting different maps. Losing a pet purchased with real money is much more annoying. Only buy these when you are confident.

Let’s look at these in turn.

Temporary pets

The clue is in the name and the term ‘pets’ is perhaps not the best description for these. ‘NPCs’ is probably better. Examples include the quest where you have to escort Princess Resa to safety or the quest where you have to locate the kings dotted around the game map. Although the NPCs follow you about, it is best not to use them as pets during PvE or PvP encounters. If they die, it may mean that you can never complete these quests. My advice? Keep them safe and quickly complete the quests they are associated with.

Pets you can buy ingame for gold

Before you buy these pets, visit different places around the world map and see how other players keep them as safe as possible. For example, at the Silverwood Castle map you will notice pets stationary (or parked) outside the castle gates. At the red mummy dungeon, they are parked at the entrance. This is to keep them out of harm’s way. However, never assume that they are 100% safe. Always keep an eye on the minimap as another player may be leading monsters onto your pets to kill them.

Once you have seen where other players park their pets, then it’s time to buy your own. Most can be purchased at the pet shop on map -1, -1. Click on the pets and it tells you at which level you can purchase them. You can only have one of these pets at a time.

Head to the Bank map (-1, 1) and find the guy selling war dogs. Here is your second pet. Now go and explore! If they die, go back and purchase another with your gold.

NB: once you finish the Proditor quest, you can summon a spectre wizard as a pet in exchange for certain items. I won’t give spoilers here – enjoy finding out yourself!

EDIT: from December 2018 onwards, players can purchase two pets from the pet shop and no longer have to buy one pet shop pet plus the war dog. See here for confirmation: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=16407&p=106384&hili ... op#p106384

Pets purchased for real money

These can be the real deal and mean that you start to level up incredibly quickly. You buy them via the ‘Buy extra stuff’ menu at the login screen. However, note that it is entirely possible to play this game without buying anything for real money.

The link for the full list of pets is at the top of this guide and different players will have different opinions as to which pets are the best for you as you progress through the levels. Nevertheless, there are some general thoughts to bear in mind.

Study the pets’ stats long and hard before making a decision. For example, the spectre wizard has devastating strength but slow frequency of attack and low hp. Would you be better buying something else? Ask other players for their advice and look at pets that other players have purchased. There must be a reason that many, many players at a certain level tend to have the same pets (for example, experienced club stans, fairies, worms and lightning blitzbees).

From a personal perspective, I resisted buying pets for a long, long time. Once my friends persuaded me to buy fairies a few levels later than the required level 380, I began to level much faster. Why did I not do this sooner? You live and learn, I guess.

I would like to add to this topic by referencing a relatively new pet in game.

Ghost of Ryaca
Lvl 20 (Purchasable at lvl 40)
Str 500
Arm 90
Dex 60
HP 500
Range 9

For its level, it's rather strong, but has low HP. I recommend it as a ranged pet with the player tanking, either in library or blood mummies. Just have to watch and make sure no enemies sneak up behind them.

It seems like you can get pets for free tho. I see horses and spiders with blue question marks above their heads. When I click it says their friendly but I don't have the skill.

Also sometimes when I click on random animals or npcs a little whip icon comes up. I click it and nothing happens.

If you answer plz keep in mind I'm new. You'll have to give me map cords ect for the answer to help

You creating a forum account is an excellent step to take as well. There are so many helpful posts here that you can search through to answer many questions, and if you can't find what you're looking for just go ahead and ask!
