For that u need ring of protection;candle;rope;and a map.

Incidentally, I have kept hold of the candle, ring, map and rope after completing the quest. Is there any point in keeping them? What have others done?

That would depend. Are they required to reenter the cave? If not, maybe u can pass it along. Or even sell. Unless they cannot be tradable like some ingots.

they are required each time you try to enter that cave. it is quite probable main quest will involve the cave again, so I would not drop or sell it. put it in bank or tavern storage until further need.
