+0 boost to +1 and +2
At the moment, +0 items can be used in conjunction with other items to craft items of a higher level.
How about the +0 items having a % chance to craft +1 or +2 items of the same level? Details to be decided but perhaps a nice twist on things?

Continued from off-topic
My envisioning:
there's an npc, that will work for a set amount of gold (gold sink)
you bring him two identical pieces of gear, and pay him, and there's a chance he will craft the next step higher
i.e. bringing two standards could make a +1, and bringing two +1s give a chance at a +2
if he fails, you could receive one of the items back, or possibly none
not sure if this agrees completely with what Leone was thinking of, but that was my take on it
any others who have ideas on how this could work, please share

Before NPC can craft, a quest must be completed

Logically, doesn't it make sense that trying to combine objects, whether similar or not, would result in a ruined/inferior object if you fail? Not getting one of the objects back as it was before? I understand games get a logic pass at times though.

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking.
But, sometimes, giving a lesser item could be a good thing, if it's something rare...
So, that would have to be carefully done if it's decided to go that way.
My line of thinking above was, if you combine two identical items, and fail, you have a chance to get one back (essentially, taking the leftover ruined parts and making one), and a chance to get nothing back. Perhaps, you could get basic crafting materials, such as planks and ingots.
Oh, there's another idea... instead of us all just selling junk items to a shop, what if there was an npc that would break them down? You could take useless drops and make them into basic components such as planks and ingots, depending on the item. Say you got a mithril plate... why couldn't you melt that down into mithril ingots? Hehe that sounds cool to me...

↑ I like this also.
And how about:
Putting the fire back into a "cooled" Fireplate.
So maybe a new plate. When a Fire Plate looses it's fire it becomes: Fireless Plate; looks the same as Fireplate without the red.
Fireless Plate -->> Non purchasable item.
Mine Lava Rock at 0.-1 = add a couple of areas to mine: Lava Rocks and combine 10 Lava Rocks with the "Fireless Plate" to remake a Fire Plate
% of success - the same as mith tools.
Now if that fails: "Fancy Platemail" so at to recover 'something' for trying.
