I like the idea of them being temporary, make them resource based instead of time based though. Like after they gain so many materials THEN they disappear. If it's just time based I wouldn't even warrant letting them be attacked as they'll just disappear in 30 mins.
If you like the idea of them being able to be attacked, allow 3-5 workers that can be assigned to do certain tasks. Give them infinite duration, but really slow at building/collecting. I'm talking like speeds of lvl 0/1. If they're working 24h a day (as long as they're alive) it will add up. Unless they get killed ofc
Or there could be both; temporary workers that work much faster, or slower ones that are infinite.
I like the idea overall though.
