If you are talking about the quest line in the Underground Village...it changes the requirements to complete the full quest line. Maybe if you finish the other quests there a new opportunity will come to use the portal. I never opened the chests so I don't know the end but I do know from looking at the quests list you have to prove yourself in a different way.

I have completed the missions, but I am still unable to enter the castle—even in the new area that was added, where the red golems and the City of Demons are located.

Ah...we are talking about different quests. I do not know this quest. Hopefully someone will help you.
