My first computer was 8-bit, using CP/M, then later MSDOS 1.0. And a Spectrum ZX.
I remember the mainframe at work (ICL1904S*) having to close all other running applications when doing the yearly statistics run because that suite of programs needed 37k (yes, kilobytes) of core memory.
I suggested using a dedicated disk pack (10 megabytes!) as core swap space and rewriting the statistics suite to use subroutine and function calls rather than repeating the same code in each and every module. I got promoted one the spot
Cheers, Ara

You make my brain hurt when I just woke up!
No, not my area of expertise at all, so I'll show myself the door from the topic now...

I "understand" what Arashiko said but implementing it, whole new game! See there were subroutines in Basic, and I played around with that so ... and then using the tiny bit of memory above the 640k the old machines had for a "virtual drive" for my BBS to use static information that didn't change made my little BBS "smoke". But it was a program that did that QEMM I think. Oh how my forgetter is getting better .... so ...
HUH! Hey Sell, what up, we'll grab a java or something....

Java is even more complicated. Stick with Visual Basic.
On the other hand a coffee is fine… mines an americano vente with hazelnut and maple...

NOOO! "java" as in coffee! Why do you think the programming language has a cuppa 'joe' as it's logo.
Code: Select all
04 Apr 18 @ 09:51:36 ~
$ wnet java
alias wnet = dict -d wn
1 definition found
From WordNet (r) 3.0 (2006) [wn]:
Java
n 1: an island in Indonesia to the south of Borneo; one of the
world's most densely populated regions
2: a beverage consisting of an infusion of ground coffee beans;
"he ordered a cup of coffee" [syn: {coffee}, {java}]
3: a platform-independent object-oriented programming language

hahahah and Visual Basic? No no, never touched that, CBM-Basic or Basic that came with MS-DOS back in the day.
Use to be pretty good with DOS Batch scripts/programs c/w subroutines, random number generators, etc. And I'm somewhere "just" beyond the basic level with Linux "bash" scripts because there is so much this old grey matter can hold and bash with all it's little helper apps and routines get me foggy!
So, with all that said and done, come have a cuppa java with Sell and me - but no programming talk, please.

NOT

or

, LK more like
= = = = =
And I'm betting 1bg
* you knew all that 'java stuff' anyway
__________
* 1 big grin -

not 1 billion gold

Damn and there I was hoping for riches LOL
I worked 5 years in the defence sector, 5 years in telecoms and 5 years for IBM.
BASIC, COBOL, FORTRAN, PL/1, ALGOL, REXX
I never did C, C+, C++… or Java

I worked, 25 years in the "defence sector", RCAF, but I was involved with building things and survey.
The last 2 years I was looking after two computers running AutoCAD v9 under DOS, and on 486's no less.

And I couldn't program my way out of a wet paper bag if my life depended on it ...
Well, that's not true, I can "tweak" stuff. Tweaked an AutoCad v9 LISP file to include some v10 features that the AutoCAD Rep said would not work in v9. He was wrong.
As for java ... I do java everyday {sip sip}
And that's the way it was! When LK was younger and had a few billion more neurons.
HEY: 1bn hahahahaha
