First, I want to thank all the folks who have spent a lot more time playing this game then me. You all have insights that I could not have yet. You all have given me many ideas. Insiders, Fiora, Snale, Patrapture and Re4ction. You've all made me look at this in a different way. However, it hasn't changed my mind. Let me try and clarify the concept.
Number one, I don't want to take away from players. Those who are happy the way it is shouldn't be inconvenienced in the slightest. They've made this a great game. Maybe you could look at this as taking it to another level. In my mind it could be.
I'm thinking of three different alternate worlds. They aren't joined. You can't bop back and forth. They do not meet. This is what I mean when I say multiple servers. They could be on different servers, but they don't have to be. They are almost exactly the same, except for the players and some basic universal laws. Let's call them "Basic", "Social" and "PvP".
Basic- This is the game world as we know it. Basic laws are Clan PvP is totally open. You wear a clan tag and you are a target. Clans are for PvP. Social groups are secondary. Non-Clannies are restricted to PvP with people 3 below your level. You want to be social you stay out of the clans.
Social- New world! Just like in "Basic" there is a PvP cap for Non-Clannies at 3 below your level. The big difference is in the clans. You wear a clan tag and the PvP cap increases to 10 below. Just to keep things interesting. (Maybe it should be 5 or 7 or maybe no change.) You don't have to cringe and strip naked every time a 400+ level clan member walks by you. She can't hurt you. Only the guy close to you in level can hurt you. Makes things interesting, but not lethal every time you go to grind. Theoretically, clans should become more social. A little PvP to keep things interesting, but not the only thing.
PvP- Another new place. This is the place for the ones that run on PvP adrenaline. That's the hope, of course. We keep the open PvP for clan members. We switch it up for Non-Clannies to the 10 level cap. Just so they can get a taste of it before joining a clan to go do real PvP wars. This world is about looking over your shoulder and remembering that the real monsters are Players not NPC monsters. Should be a great place for those that want more!
Ok, those are my basic ideas. You log on and create a character. You chose a "world" to play in and you are given the laws of that world. That character is stuck there. That's where you build her. Gives you a choice and changes the game experience.
Pros to this model-
1) You should increase retention of new players. Don't like PvP and whining about getting ganked by DOOM? Join the "Social" world and never see DOOM again.
2) You should increase retention of old players. People get bored. I've got 5 characters now. 1 of each class. I'm far from bored, but with two more worlds to conquer I can build 10 more characters.
3) You can increase revenue for the game. More Players, More Characters, More people buying skins! Oh, and I didn't mention about allowing characters to pay for transfers. Of course, once they transfer they have to follow the rules of the local world.
Negatives-
1) Cost may increase due to more players.
2) Sorry that's all I can think of!
Ok, I hope you like this. I know you won't all like it, but I'd love to hear your thoughts. I hope the admins read it and take it to heart. This has been done with other, bigger games and it could be a great way to launch this game way up. I want to be able to say that I was there when it took off.
