I've visited all the altars but not done the centre house bit yet. I gather it can be very expensive (?) and so I presume I need to finish this first.

center house is difficult, but not expensive. and yes, you need to do to to continue the story

Visit the new vulcanic islands if u have already done the 'old' houses quest (with the blue dungeon)
