You can select almost any object like a rock, tree, etc. for a house. There are some restrictions on maps, but for the most part if it isn't used yet it can be.

The upper area of spawn map "above the river" is a restricted area but you are welcome to buy a house below the river around the actual spawn. Akkilles

No, you must buy a house with real money in the 'buy extra stuff' menu or swap it for the equivalent real money value of ingame purchase items.

For this second option, if you look back through this thread you will see players buying a house for a certain numbers of pets, for example.
