I've honestly never cared much less about looking up why someone is "famous" or "well known" or whatever the terms might be that one wishes to use.
and most other players likely feel the same too, no biggie.
As for why people are, don't worry about it anyway.
Don't believe everything people tell you - every story has multiple sides.
If you meet such a person yourself, make your own decisions about them.
Reputations can be overrated or inflated anyway.
