I lit the torches. Both fire embers are gone from inventory. However, the "torches" item is still in my quest book. I went back to talk to devil in castle, but no talk bubble. Should I have attempted to fight Bal Muen, even though I would have lost? Then talk with devil?

According to my memory, BALMUEN has already weakened in the point when you lit the 2 torches. So you only have to defeat him.

Yes, to the best that I can recollect, and we know that's faulty, just walk in, 'WHACK WHACK' - done!

Once weakened, BAL MUEN has the same stats as a Dark Devil.

The guard will always say that no visitors are allowed.

Can you talk with the other npc in front of the building? He should ask you to free his brother. When the guard won't let you in talk to the npc about finding another way in.
