They were bought in this manner. I bought a gear set pack, the mithril plate was part of that. And as understand it, these items are protected according to PvP rules:

"If you die in PvP there is a 30% chance, that you lose a random equipped item, but not your weapon. (If the item was an in-game purchased item, or crafted from one, it is not dropped.)"

Yes it does state that. However you will have to wait for a response from compbatant as he deals with real money purchases.
