not too much has changed in that regard, but is being worked on as we speak (melee throwing items to stun has been implemented, which obviously helps that situation some)
Have to agree, PVP system is trash, just today it's cost me 32m (which I don't have to buy back my gear) and I can't continue to run robes because small groups of people want to continue to jump me all at once and I can't do a thing about it. Yet I go back to run robes and I can't touch any of them because of PVP system.
