Your mining will get faster as you improve the skill. The more you mine, the easier it gets.
There are also better pickaxes, available through higher level quests, or purchased from other players, that will increase the speed as well.

As for crafting, the only way to improve the chances of success is to build up the skill.
You get the most crafting xp from failing items with a low success rate.
Some players like to craft Astral Robes (level 80) at the witch shop, but this costs a lot of game gold.
Other players like to craft level 50 Bows at the blacksmith, to increase crafting skill.
Note that, failing something like planks, that have a higher success rate, will give less xp.

I'm a fan of crafting level 50 bows. Plus, you can sell them at the blacksmith shop for 1M each.

All mining gives the same amount of skill increase. No type of stone or ore gives any better than the others.
