If you use the "place inline", the image is placed inside the post text:

Otherwise it's placed as attachment:

It's after the add attachments button is selected, upload the attachments and select place inline

Is it better to place it inline? Like does it make the file smaller?

Using the place inline button, you can choose where in your post you want the attachment (a picture usually).
You have to click where you want your cursor, then click the place inline button. It should add the text with an "attachment" code.
If you don't use place inline, usually the attachment goes at the bottom of your post. Sometimes, it goes in strange places, or nowhere at all

so it's usually best to always use the place inline button.
