Subject says it all: How do pets pick targets?

• sometimes they are attacking two different targets, me a third
• sometimes they attack the same target, me a second
• sometimes they attack the same target I am attacking

I *think* pets automatically attack the nearest monster to them, but would like this confirmed.

The style of attack differs between ranged and melee pets as well . Ranged stand still whilst melee can run about everywhere trying to attack, particular when there are many obstacles (for example, library).
