So, I finally retrieved the true artifact, given it to Proditor, witnessed his reaction, and am now on the verge of the next step: retrieving Proditor's Spectre. Here's are my questions:
1) Once I summon the spectre, is there a way of the altar room that keeps me in the dungeon of doom...or will I find myself back at Start Map? I ask because each time I try to exit the altar room using the door at the room's bottom, I get a message that I can pass thru, but always remain in the altar room. I just want to know before I summon the spectre!

2) I presume that if the spectre dies before completing its mission, that I must start that process over?

When you summon the spectre you can use the alter again. It will teleport you to start, but you'll have a clean path to Proditor. Enjoy the levels and the ranks of heros!

I'm hoping that a "clean path" means limited (or no) opposition in teleporter maze, dungeon of doom, and the mage tower.

Be very careful about having a pet when you go to summon the spectre... many of the older ones will be too frightened and go crazy
