When new quests get added to the quest log, it would be great if the quest log icon flashed (1-2 seconds) or changed color (after opening the log, it returns to normal color).

What about a message envelope pops up? Open the message and you get some generic message like "your quest book has been updated" or something?

Maybe it'd be easy to miss if you friend chat a lot or are getting loads of trade requests. I know nothing about game mechanics, but maybe it'd be easier to do?

Some people might say the messages are annoying, but realistically you'd be talking about few notices (message envelope, quest log flashing, or whatever the mechanism).

I thought about the message envelope. Problem with that is it may vanish if you logoff or switch maps before viewing (I think this is what happens to other messages).

They do vanish if you log off.
If you change maps, and they're not open, they're still there.
If you open one, then change map while it's open, the open one will disappear
