but, I can't really play mage on my cruddy phone (the animations cause it to crash)
so, I'm often using my finger instead of my thumb

Finger cramps are one of the many reasons I don't like to play mage
Another reason being that I like to use speed potions

I find that attacking (causing the regular attack animation) stops the spell animation, reducing the lag you speak of.
