The weapon chest in the treasure room is quest-based, and the item given is determined by your level when opening the chest, not by which lvl of devil you kill.
I checked the quest files for this info. I hope this info helps.

Do you know if the weapon tops out at a 2k variety or has it been updated to 3k? I don't think 3k was around yet.

I ask for purely selfish reasons! ;) Ok, not entirely selfish but I'm curious if a 2k player opens it if they would get the 2k+2 or a 3k weapon.

The quest file is currently worded to allow for 3k expansion, but it was never added.
