I found the gloves but tried and tried and could not get to the shield. It was blocked off.

they are required each time you try to enter that cave. it is quite probable main quest will involve the cave again, so I would not drop or sell it. put it in bank or tavern storage until further need.

So i finally went into the cave/dungeon and these Santa Claus mages mobbed me and killed me quick. Do I have to go very far in to find the Weissten? I am currently level 87. Should i wait until i am higher level before attempting this again?

Put everything into ARM and run, don't fight Get some potions just in case too.
