Is it possible that the friend was referring to how much more experience they needed to achieve the next level, rather than the total amount for that level? Miscommunication can cause much confusion.

I'm not sure. In any event, she says that her stats show the correct XP now. I'm guessing that a GM looked at my "extremely" long friends list (lol) and picked the right one to make the adjustment.
