If the goal is levelling up craft skill, I would suggest level 50 bows.
Store 20-30 steel ingots at home, keep 10 in bags. Go mining diamonds in the ice cave in the map below the smith, fell wood close to the smith himself and craft bows.
They cost nothing, gives good xp when craft fails, and can be sold to the shop when craft succeeds. Or you can give them to low level archers
Level 150 golden armor is good too, but there's a lot of walking involved.

I personally like the 150 Gold plates.
Very low success rate.
I live in between the gold mine and the blacksmith shop, where I buy the mail ingredient at 1m a pop.
Sure, it's not good if you don't have money to spend.
But, when the gold plates do succeed, I save them.
Another item I try to craft is the 250 plate.
That's another one that's involved with a lot of steps, and doesn't always succeed.
Why do I choose these two?
They're used to make the 500 plates.
You'll need some for quests, and players are almost always looking to buy them at start map.
You can easily make a profit if you decide to sell one.
I know, this doesn't help LK much at his level, but something for him to think about in the future.
There are a few items that require a bit of time and patience, but sell really well.
He can make the gold plates, and sell those if he likes.

I was looking at those just yesterday, since it costs nothing.
For levelling up crafting skill's: It's a case of I hope it fails to succeed, or better; succeeds in failing.
BUT if you make one, well, you get a few coins for your work or make an impression on a young archer with a gift as you said.
Think I'll work on that today when I get in game. Lot's on forum at the moment another Contest winner.

Ooooooooo You sneaked this sucker in while I was slow typing the other response. I type really slow of a real keyboard too.
Excellent advice too, thank you Mad. Copied and pasted to my crafting_ideas.txt file for the future.
Currently spending time is better for me, that will change sometime though.
When it comes to crafting time and patience are not a concern. I like the walking around and will frequently stop and "tank" in areas where lower levels are either in trouble or being swamped with enemies, in some cases intervene and kill enemies if the gamer goes redline.
"move them to me" ... "run behind me" ... "get them to attack me" are common things I type out.

Meh, it will happen a bit for now.
I'm still in "new user" status, so all my posts need approval by a moderator before they get posted.
As for crafting, you are correct, that if you're just trying to build the skill, it is best to go for the lowest success rate items.
The lower the %, the more trade skill xp you get when it fails.
As you said, failure is a success.
But, I don't just go by %, nor by cost.
I also go by how useful the successes are to me.
And, even though you cannot craft the higher items yet, those that are, will pick up the gold plates off of you.
So, take a look at your crafting menu.
There is also pictures in the "buying a house" post in General Information about craft items in houses, headed with what you can craft.
500 plates are just one example.
If you see another item that's a hot item, see if you can acquire the main ingredients.
The ingredients to craft can sell pretty good too.
