And it doesn't have to be a building.
Rocks, trees, graves, coffins, almost anything that is a decorative (i.e. otherwise not functional) item in the game can be (and have been) bought as houses.

As this topic now goes on for 11 pages, perhaps 'how to buy a house (that doesn't *actually* have to be an actual house)' should be added to the FAQ?

I agree, Leone, on the need of it being easy to find. A "how to buy a house" text is in the new Game Manual text, which I *really* hope will be soon released
