A house does not need to have the physical structure of a house. It can be most static objects such as bushes, trees and rocks. The exceptions are other players' houses, mineral mine points (such as gold or mithril) and certain map locations.

Animated objects, such as water and windmills, are also not allowed.

Look back in this very thread where other players have chosen houses. They usually post screenshots, which are a more visual way of showing what I am trying to describe to you.

It has come to my attention there are houses in other so called no house zones. Maybe it's not the location but who you know that scores you the location you want! I don't get it really. In the ogre halfling cave we have houses practically stacked upon eachother, I am exaggerating but only a bit, and that is okay. But other vast areas are house free, well almost , also near resources. What agreement was made to keep those areas without houses? It really doesn't make much sense to me. You earn the right to a location only to be told the resources it has are off limits unless you want to walk and walk to get to a house far away. But I have my nice rock and am content where I am, I comment more for the new house owners or those with money enough to have several houses.
