Totally disagree. This idea has been raised many times and it would just make things too easy.

I'd run a forum search on "stack" and that would probably bring up a number of responses, some from several years ago.

With that in mind, there must be a reason why it hasn't been implemented.

I completely agree, but not necessarily. It would be possible, while still stacking the types of items listed, to limit the number of them you can carry at once, so that while it doesn't make the game easier, items like pots and knives do not take up space that would otherwise be used for regular items.
