The Island of Pearlea

The Island of Pearlea

Introduction- To follow is first the story line. Then maps and quests if this would want to be developed into game content. My computer equipment has not been able to create content so I freely give this to the FT community to do with it as you wish, borrow some or all, or simply enjoy the story concept. It is quite a lot of files so I will post it according to natural divisions. Enjoy!

Just minding my own business

I was sitting at a table in the Brass Monkey tavern when the drunken pirate in one of his loud moods was going on about some sea worms that ate his leg and reduced him to this lessened state. “Oh shut up” I thought “can’t a guy have a drink in peace?” Then he let out a wail filling the room with its pain mumbling afterward about “lost…lost…all because of a pearl!” Then he slumped in his chair in complete silence except for the sound of his flowing tears dripping off his beard into his drink. I was relieved but also wondered what he meant. I approached him cautiously but the barkeep yelled out to me “no use talking to him when he’s like this, you won’t get anything out of him but ‘lost’.” “Well what did he mean?” I asked. “Not sure but the fellow over there he plays cards with when he’s partly sober might know.” I might as well not stop I thought so I went over and asked him. He related to me the story how in gaining the black pearl “he had lost his leg so he said to the bite of a sea worm…whatever that is I certainly don’t know.” “It must be true at least in his mind because he’s talked about it for years!” I really wanted to talk to him now as the pirate map he gave me before was true enough. Maybe this old pirate had other secrets he could reveal.

I tried for several days to get him to talk but no luck. Finally as chance had it I met the guy who I had traded the dragon to for the pearl long ago. He said he also had tried to extract information but to no avail, but he paused then briefly and drew close like he had a secret to tell me. He said “I’m a little short on gold right now; I might have some information that could be of use to you.” “Oh boy this is going to get expensive “I thought. I reluctantly said “What do you need?” After a bit of haggling I agreed to 500 million gold for his information. He related to me the pirate had a mate that lived in Ardesia. He wasn’t a drunk but instead of going to sea took an early retirement and could be found often sitting on the dock there peering out across the waters deep in thought. He added “if anyone living knows what really happened and where that pearl came from it would be he.” Sensing a quest placed before me I made my plans to travel to Ardesia to find this guy.

Ardesia Bound

As luck would have it I found his mate on the dock just as I had been told. “Hey” I said “I’d like to talk to you about your mate up at the Brass Monkey.” “OH” he said “is he ailin’?” “No” I replied “He said some things that I understand as his old friend you can help me with.” “Ha ha ha” he chuckled “old gold scammer got him another victim!” My heart sank and my anger rose “You mean he lied to me?” “Well” the old pirate backtracked a bit “I can see in yer eye this means a lot to ya” he paused then “I will tell ya what I know.” My faith renewed in human nature sort of, I asked how his friend had lost his leg and about sea worms and the black pearl. He must have been extra nostalgic that day as he gazed off out to sea and began to tell a tale as if he was there and not here sitting on this dock with me. Here is what he said to me.

“Ah, we were mates you see, best mates. He began to hear tales of an island very few had visited that had the rarest of treasures the fabled black pearl. From tales we heard we began to piece together the clues into a map that told us what to find there and where she lay. Our course took us close one day and we vowed if ever we had chance we would take a small boat from our ship and make way for this island. Indeed it was a grand island with a single port of sorts and except for the sandy beach shore all around it the island was encircled with mountains. From the locals we learned this be the Island of Pearlea. Long ago the Pearleans lived here in the caverns under the mountains but some ill fate they met. Them that lived there now came like us to explore or at some point were shipwrecked here. It was told few who ventured into the bowels of the earth returned. That once underground city of the Pearleans was now the habitation of sea worms who lived in the abundant tracts of water underground. It was also told of ghosts and and undead traversing the many levels of the ancient city. Being short on life and long on adventure we found our way through the mountains to find a kind of circular trail through them until we came upon a series of round glistening circles. We learned they were a transport to the various levels of the city below but we almost turned back arguing whether we should step into or not. We may have been adventurous but we weren’t stupid! We cast lots to try it out and luckily found it easy to descend and return again.

The locals warned us about going down and they certainly were right as we ran for our lives most of the time. We found a harpoon like weapon down there which we later learned were sold in a shop there for the foolhardy to buy in order to tempt fate battling sea worms which were indeed plentiful. We discovered as our harpooning skills increased that these sea worms dropped beautiful and varied in color pearls! The shop owner was glad to trade us gold for them and after he saw our prowess at dispatching the worms told of one pearl-one pearl only he would pay a king’s ransom for-the Black Pearl! Rumor had it a sea worm of incredible strength could be found in the lowest level of the city. It was said it was ancient and the last of its kind though many other sea worms seemed to be thriving there. It was indeed a mighty battle but not without cost. As you guessed it our friend lost his leg from the knee down in the battle as he was flipped and torn in its tremendous mouth! Aye we defeated it and it surrendered to us the Black Pearl. Since that day now years past we both still have nightmares of it all. It is believed there be some evil curse upon the place and we have vowed never to return. Ah the folly of youth, we could feel in that place some kind of powerful evil at work but we thought ourselves impervious to its bane. But alas tis not so, our friend is buried alive beneath his drink and I in exile in this Ardesia ever longing for the sea but ever fearing ever to return.

Stirring a bit as if coming out of some kind of trance he finished by saying “forget it my friend, don’t tempt the fates, leave that place lost….” I never thought myself smart or particularly brave but I found myself ignoring his advice and pressing him instead how to find this island. Seeing my determination he finally with a fear filled and quivering voice told me of a small ship that came here to Ardesia from the island that a father and son ran a sort of ferry back and forth. Folks from Ardesia didn’t know of the dangers there but mostly went as a retreat of sorts. Only those who talked with the harpoonist shop owner could hear of the possibility below the surface. Yet most of those when they heard of sea worms and ghosts and the curse didn’t dare venture below. The exception was a few professional harpoonists that hunt worms for the beautiful and valuable pearls. In fact the locals use the pearls as currency he said and use gold only for those few visitors that come to that mountain laced island. I had made up my mind; curse or not I had to find my way to this island!

Pearlea Island!

Now I recount what indeed I found here by a series of maps, quest encounters, and charts. Knowing the mysterious nature of this FT world and the shifting of time as fellow planewalkers I suspect my experiences chronicled here can be repeated once for each FT persona. So I leave these notes that you who read may be wise to what may be found in this wondrous Pearlea! I did survive else this narrative would never have been completed. I bid you luck as you retrace my steps and find an adventure rare and challenging.

Epilogue

I include this here as an encouragement to attempt this great venture. Indeed the curse was broken and the captive souls of Pearlea were set free to the peace that had eluded them. The evil abandoned the island and with that news the island opened up to trade with Ardesia as there seems to be a lucrative market for pearls upon the main land. With the curse broken and ghosts laid to rest many more harpooners have joined the ranks to fight the ever thriving sea worm population. As for me, I came back with quite a fortune in gold and items. Our Ardesia pirate friend upon the curses end found his nightmares coming to an end and his fear of the sea removed. Our drunken friend though free also from the nightmares now struggles on unwilling to let go of the past to embrace a better future.

The Lay of the Island

After arriving on the broader beach on the northwest side of the island I ventured inland to a grassy area. Inside this grassy area was a local shop mainly for harpoonists needs and also within this shop a blacksmith who enhanced harpoons for increasingly stronger harpoons. The shop owner had a sweet deal going as usually the blacksmith found something wrong with older harpoons and always insisted a new harpoon be purchased before he could enhance it. The blacksmith didn’t charge for his services but required you to find and bring the items needed to enhance the harpoon. It might be noted here that although the island had gold the locals preferred pearls as currency and this shop owner would only take pearls for his harpoons. Although our pirate friends used harpoons it seems that although the shop owner was glad to sell them to me I was unable to equip them myself. But as I found later on both the shop and the blacksmith services would be needed several times.

SHOP ITEMS:
Level 1 harpoon- 2 brown pearls
Level 2 harpoon- 2 white pearls
Level 3 harpoon- 2 red pearls
Level 4 harpoon -2 blue pearls
Level 5 harpoon-2 green pearls
Level 6 harpoon-2 purple pearls

Blacksmith Upgrades:
Level 1- Bring me 10 steel ingots
Level 2- Bring me 5 steel ingots, 5 iron ingots, and 10 diamonds
Level 3- Bring me 5 souls stones and 5 meteors
Level 4- Bring me 10 mithril ingots
Level 5- Bring me 10 adamatium ingots
Level 6- Bring me 10 platinum ingots

Also within this grassy area is an NPC who goes on about lost pearls. We will hear more of him in our quest dialogue pages. Looking around the island shoreline there are several spots of interest and a hermits cave. South of the grassy area is a trail between the mountains that will lead you to the portal to descend below. Some of the mountains contain a simple trail to items of interest. When you get nearer the portals there is a man who explains how they work.

How the Portal System Works

Without the portals there is no access to the levels beneath. The first portal for levels 50-99 is open to all level 50 or higher. But to open up the portals for the next level you must bring pearls to the level sentinel which opens up the next portal to you. That sounds simple enough but there are a few obstacles. First to get the pearls you must defeat the proper type of sea worm and get a pearl drop. But that is not enough you must also build a bridge or gain assistance to cross either water or lava to the room in which the stone sentinel is and upon which the right colored pearls must be placed to open up the next portal. It is only when the last sentinel is completed that the curse is lifted. But be warned some entry ways to the sentinel room is guarded by a devil that has a demand of you!

The Various Sea Worms
Level and Color/Which City Level/Pearl Dropped/Drop Rate
Lvl 50 Brown sea worm/50-99/brown/10%
Lvl 75 White sea worm/50-99/white/5%
Lvl 100 Red sea worm/100-199/red/10%
Lvl 200 Blue sea worm/200-249/blue/5%
Lvl 250 Green sea worm/350-499/green/10%
Lvl 350 Purple sea worm/500-749/purple/5%
Lvl 500 Royal sea worm/750-999/royal/10%
Lvl 750 Translucent sea worm/1000+/translucent/5%

Pearls needed for sentinels
City Level 1- 2 brown 2 white
City Level 2- 2 white 2 red
City Level 3- 2 red 2 blue
City Level 4- 2 blue 2 green
City Level 5- 2 green 2 purple
City Level 6- 2 purple 2 royal
Final Level 7- 2 royal 2 translucent
