Campfire
Is there any other purpose for it other than lighting up space?

Re: Campfire
That is really about it. You could maybe make a few to try guiding your spawn a certain direction or something like that, but I don't know how well that would work.

Re: Campfire
I'd avoid using campfires for PvP because it could be a rules violation under certain circumstances.

The advice was well-meant and well-founded. You either follow it, or you don't- that's up to you.
Of course, that also means accepting the consequences of your actions.

Re: Campfire
I also said under certain circumstances.
Suppose a player builds 2-3 campfires to trap themself in a small area. That's probably fine.
Suppose a low level archer or mage wants to attack a higher level sword. The sword is in a spot where he can easily be trapped so the archer/mage builds campfires. When the sword complains the archer/mage says they placed the campfires to "protect themselves." That's not good, and before anyone says that's extreme just consider the bogus excuses and half truths many players use.
Or suppose I want to mine platinum so I block it off so other players can't reach. The excuse made could be "protection," but when it's really making somewhere inaccessible it's a different issue.
So yeah, it depends on the circumstances.
