I try to get all of the available henchmen as soon as possible, so they level up more or less at the same level. Also try to get the mage as soon as you can and drop that bump of blue knight that will just make the game impossible at high levels.

Just make sure that before you get rid of the blue knight, you unequip all of his items so you can sell them.
