I noticed this too until I figured out that sometimes the dark devil appears outside the room just by the door (thought he was a blinking mage at first until I noticed he was different). Save the game just before you go into the room then go in, make your sacrifice with the map zoomed out and see where the devil pops up. More often than not, he's outside the room and he disappears when you try and open the door. Reload until he appears in the room then he's yours!

You'll need full health points and plenty of Mana or you're doomed!

I got him to spawn outside the room and then he completely wiped out my party
