In my opinion the situation with updates causing problems completely changed when the creator allowed unlimited buying.

before ft was free to.play game or only small amounts were spend for an item.
so if you don't like it , u quit. easy.

now people are encouraged to spend lots of money on it. some spend thousands of dollars.
for this money they got rights too.
now consumer protection acts kick in.

if u sell a product it should not be faulty. a cardealer is not allowed to sell faulty cars. he cannot decide to change top speed the next time u visit a dealer.

if you got a problem he has to get it repaired by professionals, not wait ubtil volunteers have time.

In summary:
creator encourages level buying in high amounts.
now that hes earning from ft he is required to provide a stable platform and professional services.
volunteers can help. but he must create the environment in which they operate and he can not be dependant on them for providing that stable platform and professiinal services.
Its not only common sense, its the law in many countries. and licence agreements dont change that.

I know I don't agree with you on some things rear but I fully agree about this. Hopefully comp does something about it soon, I personally won't be spending another dime till the game shows some form of promise that it won't be completely dead in the next year....
