questions about skill leveling

I just started the game the other day and I really enjoy playing it. My question involves the crafting skill sets like fishing, mining etc.

What is the point of leveling them? Will it improve the time needed to get an item? Is it needed for quests later on? Or is it just to pass the time?

If it's just to pass time that's still fine with me I just enjoy the game as a whole and wanted to know what they are for.

You do need to mine and chop down trees in order to pass certain quests, but other than that I would concentrate more on your str /dex/arm.

Leveling your skill increases time to receive whatever you're mining/chopping. Smith skill improves success chance.

Thank you for replying. Another question I have ore how do I make it into bars.. or ingots?

Take them to the blacksmith and he'll tell you how many you need to make different items.
