hmm... too bad he didn't turn outlaw for a couple hours immediately upon his attack.... that would have solved this problem nicely (and many others) :p

Well it's an old post but the way I read it, he didn't become an outlaw following this episode but received a warning he could be made one after killing other players.
But still, it does seem odd: after all he was defending himself rather than initiating the attack.
