Pets do not need to be standing right next to you to follow you thru portals/doors

They just need to be not walking

They can even be fighting monsters so long as they not walking

The key is not walking

I think you may be mistaken about the fighting part?
I found my pets will sometimes teleport, but mostly not if they are engaged in battle...
But you are right about the idea that if they are not moving, they will teleport, regardless of where they are.

And the inverse is true.
If you DON'T want them to teleport, make sure THEY ARE moving when you jump through.

I actually tested this

I have black dragons tho and when they fight they stand still as they shoot fire

It may vary from pet to pet

They follow me thru every time as long as they are not walking
