Go get the emulator and play the game, if you want to understand ;)

The game is very good, was revolutionary for its time, and has touched the hearts of many.
The story is decent too.
It's no surprise that many of the sequels were mostly "remakes".
The next generation incarnation is probably even more popular - but it hits the 3D market, and the controls are kinda clunky, so I don't recommend it for you personally. Not unless you get some 3D gaming under your belt maybe, as it's kinda tough to learn at first. Newer games do it much better.
