Perhaps a cancel button on the pet/skin menu would do better? The item is used (as normal) when pet/skin menu is activated. If you cancel out of the menu, it simply places the pet/skin item back into your backpack. Since the item was just pulled from inventory, the space it vacated should be open, so inventory overflow shouldn't be an issue. I suggest this as it would be less open to abuse.

As far as removing a current pet/skin, even if the wrong one was just chosen, I have to disagree, as the potential for it to be buggy (and abused) increases based on the complexity of the change. Doesn't choosing a pet/skin have a verifying checkmark needed to finalize? A simple button in the pet/skin menu that cancels the pet/skin menu and adds the item back to backpack has FAR less potential for such. Even then, testing would be necessary.

Edit: I just realized that your wording may have actually meant while in menus, not after choosing. If so, I apologize for not catching that. Still, my point (and possibly yours) still stands.

What I'd love to see, and if it's been changed, I apologize, I haven't built for a while now, is a safe guard for deleting Towers, Castles.

Long days of building and with 2 clicks(and no this is not a Trivago commercial  ) you've deleted months worth of 'sweat equity' and all items contained inside.

There should definitely be a, 'ARE YOU SURE YOU WISH TO DELETE YOUR 2,850 LEVEL CASTLE LAMEBRAIN, IT HAS TAKEN YOU 2 MONTHS TO BUILD, REALLY, ARE YOU SURE? button(maybe an acronym instead :P )

How you put it that is, but not the situation.
That would be a mini-RPG-heart attack and NOT funny at all.

This would be a great idea. My first pet purchase was for a staff stan... only I didn't check the level requirement closely and had to level up twice with the pet selection screen popping with every map change or log. Annoying.
