Devil island quest

So - I ran into the bloke in the doorway at Devils Island and sorted that quest. I found the not so hard to find secret library nearby. In there, I got this quest:

Find someone that can read the ancient texts, and tell you about the special magic.

Now I am stuck and also worried I should have picked up a book from the library. Where do I go next? I have looked in the usual places but I'm clearly missing something.

Clicking on "spoiler=" doesn't work right.

It doesn't add the "=" like the menu up there says.

OK, I'm in the process of completing the various tasks to weaken Bal Muen. A thought occurred: once weakened, do I only get one shot to kill Bal Muen? If I fail, do I need to gather the materials to weaken him again or does he stay in the weakened condition indefinitely?
