Why is the new staff a down grade?

You're talking about the lv125 one? Yes, I don't like the range 6 on it either...
It does have 100 damage and 95 mana, but that doesn't offset the range loss IMO

The three new pieces of gear were meant to address three common complaints:
One of the complaints of this game is that everybody always uses the same gear (presumably because there is always a clear-cut best option) ... the staff and armor were an attempt to combat that (the pharaoh armor was originally submitted as +20 dexterity instead of +30 strength) there are some situations where one is better, other situations where the other is better... (before it is asked, I will explain a situation where spectre staff is better than diamond for two reasons - level 125 mage grinding/earning gold in robes dungeon ... with boots, easy to have enough dex to hit corpses, where extra damage will help. Additionally, while the extra mana will not add damage to each cast, but it will increase your mana regeneration rate which is obviously an advantage. Range here won't really matter at all... again, I WANTED a down side to the new gear. Admittedly, a level 125 mage getting the staff on his/her own is super difficult, but that just serves to improve the in-game economy)
Another common complaint is that mages have armor that can not drop, but other classes do not (giving big advantage to mages by not worrying about unequipping gear or risk losing it) the "no drop" pharaoh armor is a huge improvement in this area (IMO)
A third common complaint is that there are no good misc items to use because they are all so outdated. The boots were intended to address this issue.

Wow blitz, when you put it that way, it makes a lot of sense. I wasn't aware that you had those intentions, thank you for your thoughts. This is a step in the direction of varied playstyles.
Also, I wasn't aware the pharoah armor didn't drop (although I read you said non-droppable armor was added, I had forgotten about it in the excitement of the new maps).
Really, you put a lot more effort and thought into this than many realise. Congrats, and thanks!

... I often over analyze things LOL ... case in point, I edited my post to explain a bit better -- read the revision, it may convince you to carry both

Only thing its good for is melee pvm, other wise pointless for pvp or any ranged monsters

Pharaoh armour is very good. Too good. 100% craft rate and no drop means gold plate will be worth nothing however. Used to be worth 80m but now 30m ill say

Now that it dropped in price, they will be happy to buy for 30M each.
