next to where it says new posts, there should be another option, all posts made in the last 24 hours., then we only have to check once a day instead of several tines a day (which few people do consistently anyway(except mods))
the view new posts button just refreshes ever couple hours or something like that. means that if we dont wanna miss a post, we either have to check through ever topic or check several times a day....i think this is annoying.
if you like, il email phpbb and ask them if this is possible, only with admins permission of course.

If u have unread post(s) in a certain topic, the icon corresponding to the topic is darker 
Use "mark forum read" to reset the icon color

i mean, at the top left of full forum style, there are some options, to choose unread posts, active forum and new posts....
in new posts, it refreshes too often to be of any use, unless we check multiple times a day. whixh is boring and tedious considering not everyone uses the forum. i would like an option to check all the posts madein the last 24 hours, then i only have to check it once a day instead of several times a day.
