I saw a topic earlier about players being bugged by messages and freind requests, asking to limit the number.

I propose a different approach:
messages do not pop up, but have a special icon on screen displaying number of unread messages, including text messages, friend requests, sale proposals and clan invitations.
This way they do not interfere with main activity, like pvp, or tough monster battles, be they specifically sent to do that or just an unfortunate coincidence. Also coincidental messages would not be lost this way.

... I only read the message from creator you receive upon reaching lelve 10 on my 4th char, because first 3 i received in heat of battle, when i could not afford to spend time on reading.

Things like 'who killed me' can be integrated nicely this way. And system messages too.
